The paper examines Nigeria’s federalism as it relates to local government administrative and financial autonomy. It adopts qualitative approach using secondary sources of data collection. Findings revealed that local government in Nigeria lacks administrative and financial autonomy to fully carry out their functions as enshrined in the 4th schedule to the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. This has negatively affected development at the grassroots level. The study recommends that if local government is given full autonomy, it would be able to make and implement decisions, look into the needs of the people, plan and execute projects, and provide them with basic amenities such as education, infrastructure, health and social amenities. The local government would become more efficient and effective to render and deliver services for the advancement and wellbeing of rural duelers in Nigeria.
