Abstract

This paper considered; subsidy removal and lecturers' job performance in Nigerian universities: challenges and suggested strategies Review of scholarly literature, drawing on studies on fuel subsidy removal shows that it has become a contentious issue in Nigeria. Removal of subsidies often occurs in response to fiscal constraints or as part of structural economic reforms. While subsidies can promote social welfare, such as affordable energy or food, their long-term sustainability can be questioned due to the burden subsidies impose and potential market distortions. The subsidy removal process is often accompanied by social and political challenges, especially if it affects the cost of essential goods and services for the general population. university lecturers, especially in Nigeria who were already agitating for improved university education before subsidy removal are posed with challenges that work against successful lecturers’ job performance. This paper explores; concepts of subsidy removal and job performance; it also considered; lecturers' job performance in public universities; global determinants of lecturers' job performance; perceived challenges faced by Nigerian lecturers as a result of subsidy removal as well as; strategies to improve lecturers’ job performance in Nigerian universities.
